Module 4: Pre-Shampoo & Preparation
Section 3 — Pre-Shampoo Technique: Purpose & Practical Application
This section covers the foundational principles and step-by-step procedure of the pre-shampoo — the opening ritual of every Original Method treatment. Estimated module duration: 60 minutes.
3-1. Purpose of the Pre-Shampoo
The pre-shampoo is not a simple "pre-wash." It is the starting point of the treatment experience, serving three essential functions.
1. Scalp Environment Preparation
Gently lifts excess sebum and surface impurities before the main shampoo. Enhances penetration of subsequent cleansing and supports healthy scalp circulation and metabolism.
2. Mental & Nervous System Transition
Soft, enveloping touch signals safety and calm. Gradually shifts the client into parasympathetic dominance — breathing deepens and physical tension releases.
3. Therapist Observation & Adjustment
Allows assessment of scalp tension, dryness, oil balance, and sensitivity. Enables fine-tuning of pressure, rhythm, temperature, and hand positioning for the main treatment.

The pre-shampoo is where listening through touch begins.
3-2. Practical Procedure — Preparation Requirements
Yuki Original Method
Towel Setup
Towels already positioned; warm or steamed neck towel in place before the client is seated.
Client Positioning
Client comfortably seated or reclined in the shampoo chair, fully supported and at ease.
Water Temperature
36–38°C — a comfort-oriented, calming range that supports relaxation and scalp receptivity.
Practical Steps
Approx. 5–7 minutes · Yuki Original Method
01
Gentle Wetting of the Scalp
Use cupped hands to introduce water gradually. Avoid strong water pressure.
02
Frontal to Crown Soothing Wash
Use finger pads to draw slow circular motions along the forehead and crown line (Baihui area).
03
Side to Nape Flow
Guide movement from above and behind the ears toward the occipital area, softly releasing tension.
04
Occipital Support & Light Pressure
Apply gentle thumb pressure around the occipital ridge — an area linked to eye strain and headaches.
05
Rinse & Towel Support
Rinse calmly and wrap with an absorbent towel, maintaining verbal reassurance throughout.
3-3. Technical & Sensory Considerations
Pressure
Aim for a sensation of being "held and released," not "strong" or "stimulating." Sensitivity over force.
Breath Synchronization
Regulate your own breathing first, then naturally match the client's rhythm to deepen their relaxation.
Presence
Silence is part of the technique. Speak only when necessary, using a soft, unhurried tone.
Water Flow
Create a continuous, enveloping flow rather than rinsing forcefully. Comfort always comes first.

Conceptual Insight
In YOU ZEN Head Spa, preparation is already treatment. By the time the main shampoo begins, the body and mind have already said "yes."
The pre-shampoo functions as a ritual of connection. It marks the moment where:
Touch replaces words
Safety replaces tension
Technique becomes communication
